Are Maine Coons Hypoallergenic?

Are Maine Coon Cats a Good Fit for Allergy Sufferers?

One of the most common questions we get is: “Are Maine Coons hypoallergenic?”
The short answer is: not exactly, but there’s a bit more to it

Maine Coons are not considered hypoallergenic. Like all cats, they produce a protein called Fel d 1, which is found in their saliva, skin, and dander. This protein is what typically causes allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

However, some allergy sufferers find they can tolerate Maine Coons better than other breeds. Here’s why:

Why Some People React Less to Maine Coons

  • Lower Fel d 1 levels (possibly):
While studies are limited, some people report fewer symptoms with Maine Coons, possibly due to their slower grooming habits or differences in saliva protein levels.
  • Thicker coat, less shedding:
Maine Coons have a long, dense coat that doesn’t shed as much as shorter-haired breeds, which may reduce the spread of allergens.
  • Gentle personalities = less face contact:
Because Maine Coons are laid-back and not always “in your face,” some allergy sufferers find them easier to manage.

Tips If You Have Mild Allergies

If you or someone in your home has a mild cat allergy, here are a few tips to help:

  • Keep your home well-ventilated and vacuum regularly
  • Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter
  • Wipe your cat with pet-safe grooming wipes to reduce dander
  • Wash hands after petting and avoid face contact
  • Choose allergy-friendly bedding and furniture

And most importantly: spend time around Maine Coons before committing. At Nacoonzi, we’re happy to talk through your concerns and help you decide if the breed is a good fit for your household.
